World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

1 in 6 people 60 years and older have experienced some form of abuse in their community during the past year.

Rates of elder abuse are high in institutions such as nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

Rates of elder abuse have increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elder abuse can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences.
